Fall Grant Recipient

The Greater Fostoria Community Foundation (GFCF)has recently awarded a grant in the amount of $1,262 for the Fall of 2008. The recipient of the grant is: Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, Maumee Valley Region. The purpose of the grant is to help support the program, Salvaging Sisterhood, which the Girl Scouts' Regional office will be providing to girls age 12 - 17 in Fostoria schools. Salvaging Sisterhood teaches girls about the signs and dangers of relational aggression as well as how to avoid being a victim or bystander of this form of bullying. Salvaging Sisterhood combines activities that are fun, and of interest to girls, with methods that give girls the skills and experience they need to positively maneuver through society. With the Salvaging Sisterhood curriculum girls will be challenging behaviors and beliefs, using role playing, interactive games and small group discussions to bring awareness of how relational aggression affects the lives of girls everyday.

OSU/Michigan raffle winner!

Congratulations to Jane Vandekerkhoff of Fostoria, who was the winner of the two tickets to the OSU/Michigan football game on November 22nd. The purpose of the raffle was to raise money for Zero Tolerance and the Greater Fostoria Community Foundation. A total of 313 tickets were sold raising $2,150. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser.

OSU/MICHIGAN raffle

Raffle tickets are currently on sale to win 2 tickets to the Ohio State/Michigan football game on November 22, 2008. Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $20. Drawing to be held in October. All proceeds to benefit the Greater Fostoria Community Foundation and the Zero Tolerance Task Force. Mardi Gras 2009

Mark your calendars for Friday, February 20, 2009!! It's our annual Mardi Gras Dance at Meadowbrook Ballroom in Bascom, with Rusty Vinyl providing the music to keep the party going. For more information or to reserve your tables now, contact Amie at the Foundation at 419-435-2823. All proceeds from the Mardi Gras go into the Foundations Operating Fund for operational expenses.

2008 Spring Grant Recipients

The Greater Fostoria Community Foundation awarded $4,687.74 in grants this spring to 3 agencies. Daybreak of Fostoria received $1,187.74 from the Mary Esther & Orville Miller Memorial Fund to provide scholarships for clients with Alzheimer's disease. Accesssible and affordable adult daycare is provided by Daybreak. Seneca County Humane Society received $2,500 to help develop a low cost spay and neuter program that serves all of Seneca County. VISION 2020/FEDC Mentoring Program received $3,000 to expand the current program to include middle and high school students. Since 1998 the Greater Fostoria Community Foundation has awarded more than $665,860 in charitable grants to support the programs of local non-profit groups and organizations.

2007 Fall Grant Recipients

The Greater Fostoria Community Foundation awarded $4,000 in grants in the fall of 2007. The grant recipients are: VISION 2020 - $2,000 to support the Mentoring Program in the Fostoria Schools. Hancock County Humane Society - $2,000 to help accessorize a rescue vehicle. The Greater Fostoria Community Foundation is building a permanent endowment to support community needs in areas such as human services, the arts, culture, humanities, economic development, civic affairs, education, health and social services. Since the Foundation's inception in 1998, more than $665,860 in charitable grants have been awarded to local organizations in Fostoria and the surrounding townships.

Zero Tolerance Celebrates 1st Anniversary

In April of 2006 the Zero Tolerance Task Force was implemented and since then the community of Fostoria has seen great results from this task force. The Zero Tolerance annual meeting was held on April 12, 2007 at the Roppe Training Center. Mike Cortez, lead deputy for the task force, gave a presentation on the first year results: Total Incident Reports: 132 Criminal Arrests: 104 Minor Misdemeanors: 36 Misdemeanor Requests: 122 Felony Requests: 79 Type of Arrest: Drug Offense - 117 Weapons Offense - 5 Assault/Violence - 1 Vehicle Related - 80 Total Traffic Stops: 904 Total Warnings Issued: 650 Total Traffice Arrests: 300 Traffic Arrest Type: DUS/NO OL/LIC VIOL - 63 OVI/OMVUAC - 44 Intersection related citations - 7 Restraints/child seats - 6 Other traffice violations - 121 The Zero Tolerance program was awarded the Ohio Crime Prevention Association Corporate Crime Prevention Award. The program also received a grant for $20,000 from the Ohio Criminal Justice Service.
